To enable the recovery of salmon and orca whales, our movement recognizes that we must transition salmon fisheries out of the ocean—where hundreds of salmon populations originating from rivers and streams across the North American West Coast are known to comingle.
We understand that salmon fisheries occurring far from the rivers and streams where salmon originate cannot be managed sustainably to allow for selective harvesting of individual abundant populations while protecting comingling salmon populations that are threatened with extinction.
Our movement—representing individuals, organizations, and businesses across the West Coast of the United States and Canada—calls on resource managers and policymakers to reform mixed-stock salmon fishing in the ocean and Let Our Salmon Come Home. Together, we demand a coastwide management transition toward salmon fisheries that occur in or near rivers of salmon origin.
These science-based reforms will improve the sustainability of salmon fisheries to allow orca whales to access marine prey, increase salmon returns to local watersheds, enable fishers to harvest selectively, and restore local management over the destiny and recovery of salmon populations and river-based fisheries.
